Whether you want hardcore Jillian or Fit TV’s dreamy Gilad, a little homework on the front end will make the search process a cinch. The key, find a trainer with the right personality for you.

1.  Assess the chemistry. Exchange a few words with the personal trainer both on the phone and in person. Do they seem rushed? Do they pay attention to you? Do they listen carefully to your questions? Or do they pull rank and ego?

2.  Trust your intuition. If the chemistry feels right, chances are good that you have found a winner. But if the trainer  appears too relaxed or perhaps scares the ba-jeebers out of you, it means one thing. Keep on searching.

3.  Be patient. Why? Because it can mean the difference between finding a ho-hum trainer to finding a remarkable trainer who dishes up motivation and encouragement.

4.  Ask about certifications and a training philosophy.  How long has the trainer worked in the profession?

5.  Before buying time with a personal trainer or signing contracts, always ask for a free consultation. This way, you can try before you buy. Most reputable trainers offer the first consult at no cost.
