Want to blast away up to 500 calories in just 45 minutes? Then grab a set of wheels, and start spinning.  Around since the 80s, this cardiovascular workout continues to grow as more people discover it. Unlike the Stairmaster or low impact cardio classes, spinning revolves around a social network comprised of other riders.  Climb hills together, race each other, or slow down for the recovery phase. Because of varied motions, spinning enthusiasts pedal while standing or sitting or a combination of both, called jumps. Increased intensity on the flywheel simulates a treacherous climb. Some instructors take their class on a windy road through the Swiss Alps or up to Pikes Peak.

Spinning, like bike riding is a non-weight bearing exercise. And that means it doesn’t build bone mass. But that’s ok because spinning is gentler on the joints. Bad knees? No problem. Spinning is ideal for those with knee ailments. The key is seat adjustment. If the seat is too high, the leg will appear in a 90 degree line. Opt for a slight bend in the knee to avoid risk of knew hyper-extension.

Great music melts time making workouts fly by.  Look for instructors who take pride in their playlist.  Bad music in any exercise class leaves only one option - leave. But do continue to search for a class and instructor with great tunes and an upbeat attitude.
